St. Lawrence is not just about food a variety of other shops are here to meet your needs but more importantly this market has history. The building was originally Toronto’s city hall when it was first built in 1845 and stayed in that role until 1899. It was vacated in 1902 and made in to a market. Changes to the design and structure were made over time and it incorporates elements of both Victorian and Georgian elements in it architecture. It exudes akind of old world charm which we miss with all the superstores and megamalls that we usually visit. In fact National Geographic named it the worlds best food market beating out New York’s Union Square Greenmarket and St. Lucia’s Castries Market in 2012!
